Fereidoun Rezanezhad is a Research Associate Professor in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of Waterloo. He serves as a Mercator Fellow in the Baltic TRANSCOAST Research Training Group and Co-op Program Coordinator for the Ecohydrology Research Group.
His research centers on Critical Zone Science in northern cold regions (Canada's temperate to subarctic/permafrost zones), investigating climate/land-use impacts on carbon, nutrients, contaminants, and biogeochemical fluxes across atmospheric-hydrospheric-geospheric interfaces. Key foci include ecohydrology, watershed science, soil/water quality dynamics, hydrogeochemical processes at aquatic-terrestrial interfaces, biogeochemical nutrient cycling, groundwater-surface water interactions in wetlands/peatlands, seasonal freeze-thaw mechanics, and microplastics transport.
Rezanezhad holds the Mercator Fellowship in the Baltic TRANSCOAST Research Training Group for exceptional international research collaboration.
He has secured over $21M in competitive funding from NSERC, CFI, Global Water Futures, Qatar National Research Fund, US Department of Energy, and industry partners. His mentorship spans 75+ PhD, MSc, BSc students and postdoctoral fellows across international collaborations.
Leading the Ecohydrology Research Group, he pioneers advanced methodologies including automated water-table fluctuation/freeze-thaw soil columns, flow-injection switch-box systems, pore-water samplers, and hydro(bio)geophysical sensors for high-resolution subsurface process monitoring at multiple spatial scales.
