Ferdinand Schweser

Ferdinand Schweser is an Associate Professor at the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, University at Buffalo, with joint appointments in Biomedical Engineering and Radiology. As Technical Director of the Center for Biomedical Imaging, his work focuses on quantitative MRI techniques, brain iron abnormalities in multiple sclerosis (MS), and neurodegenerative disorders. His research includes paramagnetic rim lesions, quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM), and neuroinflammation in MS.

Dr. Schweser’s research bridges advanced MRI methodologies with clinical applications in MS, emphasizing iron metabolism, gray and white matter pathology, and longitudinal disease progression. Current projects involve IRONMAP for tracking brain iron abnormalities and QSM algorithm validation. His work highlights paramagnetic rim lesions as predictors of relapse and disability in MS, alongside studies on thalamic atrophy and cognitive recovery. Articles also explore diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), in vivo spinal cord imaging, and microglial activation in animal models. Key themes include neuroinflammation, iron dyshomeostasis, and biomarker development for neurodegenerative diseases.
