Fenglian Xu is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biology at Saint Louis University's College of Arts and Sciences. Her research focuses on neuronal outgrowth, synaptic plasticity, and mechanisms underlying brain repair after injury or degeneration. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Alberta.
Dr. Xu's lab uses Lymnaea stagnalis and rat cortical/hippocampal cell cultures with advanced techniques like electrophysiology and confocal microscopy. Key research areas include synapse formation, environmental impacts on neuronal molecules, and identifying genes/proteins critical for brain development. Her work addresses neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative diseases, including stroke and Alzheimer's-related pathology.
Publications highlight studies on progranulin's neuroprotective role in hyperglycemia, GPER's role in neurodevelopment, and adropin's correlation with aging-related neuropathology. Techniques span molecular biology, calcium imaging, and nanomaterial-based neural stimulation studies.
