Prof. Felix Elsner holds the position of Professor of Instrumental and Vocal Pedagogy and Improvisation at the University of the Arts Bremen since 2022. Previously, he served as a full-time music education instructor there from 2011–2017, implementing the MM-KPA study program. His career includes teaching roles at Folkwang University, Universität Oldenburg, University of Kassel, and music academies in Cologne, Mannheim, and Bremen.
Education: He completed studies in music and education at Folkwang University (Essen), Universität Oldenburg, and University of Kassel, earning awards including the Folkwang Prize (1997) and Kassel Culture Prize (2000). His 2017 PhD focused on 'Improvisation in Music and Theatre,' applying Foucaultian discourse analysis to German improvisation pedagogy.
Research interests span music pedagogy, improvisation techniques (including digital media integration), jazz/popular music, and interdisciplinary performance formats. He leads courses on music education, improvisation, jazz piano, and digital media in teaching. His seminars explore topics like iPad improvisation, jazz-classical crossover, and political education through music.
Performance career: Since 1993, he has performed as a pianist across Europe, Africa, and Asia with ensembles from multiple countries. His work with improvisational theatre and the Goethe Institut highlights his global engagement. He also curated Bremen's 'Jugend Jazzt' program (2015–2022).
