Prof. Felix Baumberger is a Professor of Physics at the University of Geneva and Director of the Department of Quantum Matter Physics. He holds a joint affiliation with the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI), where he leads the Laboratory for Advanced Spectroscopy and X-ray Sources. His academic journey includes a PhD from the University of Zurich, a postdoc at Stanford University with Z.-X. Shen, and a prior position as Lecturer (Assistant Professor) at the University of St Andrews, where he established the first UK ARPES research group and proposed the I05 beamline at Diamond Light Source.
- Institutional Roles: Director of the Department of Quantum Matter Physics, University of Geneva.
- PSI Affiliation: Scientist at the SIS ARPES beamline.
His research focuses on the electronic structure of complex materials, including two-dimensional electron gases (2DEGs) on insulating oxides, correlated Hund’s metals, and van der Waals heterostructures. He pioneered laser-based micro-focus ARPES to study atomically thin layered systems.
Key projects include the SNSF-funded R'Equip grant for oxide heterostructure studies and strategic development of photoemission experiments at the SLS synchrotron. Over 50 peer-reviewed publications highlight his work on topological materials, metal-insulator transitions, and ARPES spectroscopy.
Labs/Teams: Leads the 'Spectroscopy of Novel Materials' group at PSI and collaborates with the SIS beamline team for cutting-edge photoemission setups.
