Felipe H. da Jornada is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Stanford University, leading a theory/computational research group focused on 2D and quantum materials. His work spans predictive modeling of electronic and optical properties for applications in energy research, renewables, and quantum technologies. Affiliated with Stanford's Jornada Research Group, he integrates quantum field theory with high-performance computing to study excitonic phenomena, proximity effects, and moiré superlattices.
- Ph.D. in Physics (2017) from UC Berkeley under Steven G. Louie
- M.S. and B.A. in Physics from Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil (2010, 2007)
Research interests emphasize ab initio methods to study exciton dynamics, singlet fission, and proximity-induced tuning of many-body interactions. Key themes include twisted 2D materials, exciton dissociation, and environmental screening effects. Recent publications highlight machine learning in materials discovery and first-principles analysis of moiré-localized excitons.
Awarded the IUPAP Early Career Award (2025), ONR YIP (2024), and NSF CAREER (2023), his group mentors Ph.D. students in Materials Science and Applied Physics. Collaborations with institutions like UC Berkeley and SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory drive innovations in quantum material design and high-performance computing.
