Felicia Gottmann is an Associate Professor of History at Northumbria University and Principal Investigator (PI) of the UKRI Future Leaders’ Fellowship Project ‘Migration, Adaptation, Innovation 1500-1800’. Her research focuses on global and transnational processes in early modern Europe, including globalization, technological innovation, and political economy. She leads interdisciplinary projects investigating migration’s role in technological development and supervises PhD students in related fields.
Her academic journey includes postdoctoral roles at the Universities of Dundee (Leverhulme ECR Fellow) and Warwick, following a DPhil from Oxford. She has authored monographs such as *Global Trade, Smuggling, and the Making of Economic Liberalism: Asian Textiles in France 1680-1760* (2016), examining the impact of Asian trade on French state practices and Enlightenment economic thought.
Teaching emphasizes material culture and global connections, with modules like HI5037 ‘Globalising Worlds’ and HI6034 ‘Big Business in Asia?’. She innovatively integrates non-textual sources and museum/archive visits into pedagogy, securing funding for student-led research projects.
Current projects include the UKRI FLF initiative exploring migration-technology links through case studies in Europe, the Islamic World, and East Asia. Collaborations involve postdocs, partner organizations, and analysis of transnational capital and expertise integration.
