Dr. Feiyue Wang is a Professor and Canada Research Chair (Tier 1) in Arctic Environmental Chemistry at the University of Manitoba, where he also serves as Associate Dean (Research) for the Clayton H. Riddell Faculty of Environment, Earth, and Resources. He leads the Environmental Chemistry and Biogeochemistry Group and is the Project Lead for both the Churchill Marine Observatory (CMO) and the Sea-ice Environmental Research Facility (SERF). His research focuses on understanding the processes controlling the release, fate, and effects of contaminants in Arctic ecosystems amid climate change.
- Ph.D. from Peking University (China)
- B.Sc. from Wuhan University (China)
- NSERC IRF (1998-2000)
- Postdoctoral Fellow at INRS-ETE (Quebec City, 1996-1998)
- Postdoctoral Fellow at Research Center for Eco Environmental Sciences (CAS, China, 1995-1996)
Dr. Wang's research addresses critical environmental challenges in the rapidly changing Arctic. His work examines mercury cycling in polar environments, oil spill response techniques in ice-covered waters, and microplastic degradation in marine ecosystems. He employs both field measurements in the Canadian Arctic and controlled laboratory experiments to understand fundamental chemical processes in sea ice and cold environments. His research team works closely with Indigenous rights holders and other stakeholders to develop practical solutions for sustainable Arctic development.
Analysis of Dr. Wang's recent publications reveals a strong focus on mercury biogeochemistry in polar regions, with particular attention to sea ice processes, atmospheric mercury cycling, and the impacts of climate change on contaminant fate. His work bridges fundamental chemical processes with practical environmental applications, particularly in oil spill response research. The publications demonstrate interdisciplinary approaches combining field observations, laboratory experiments, and modeling to address complex environmental challenges in the Arctic.
- Canada Research Chair (Tier 1) in Arctic Environmental Chemistry (2016-2023, renewed 2023)
- NSERC Discovery Accelerator Supplements (2016)
- Environment Division R&D Dima Award from the Chemical Institute of Canada (2021)
- City of Winnipeg Community Service Award (2012)
- Elected Chair of the Environment Division of the Chemical Institute of Canada (2014)
Dr. Wang has supervised numerous graduate students through their PhD and MSc programs, with many now holding academic and research positions worldwide. His research has been supported by multiple NSERC grants and collaborative projects including the OSICA (Oil Spills in Ice-Covered Arctic waters) Consortium. He actively engages with policymakers and stakeholders to ensure his research informs sustainable development practices in the Arctic.
Dr. Wang leads several major research facilities including the Churchill Marine Observatory (CMO), which officially opened in 2024, and the Sea-ice Environmental Research Facility (SERF). His research group includes technicians, postdoctoral fellows, and graduate students working collaboratively on Arctic environmental chemistry problems. The group has established international partnerships with institutions in Denmark, China, and the United States to advance understanding of polar environmental processes.
