Fei Zhang is a tenure track lecturer at KU Leuven, holding dual appointments in the Faculty of Medicine and Faculty of Engineering Sciences. Zhang is affiliated with the Department of Materials Science and the Department of Oral Health Sciences, working within the Biomaterials (BIOMAT) unit at Capucijnenvoer 7 and the Functional Materials (SIEM) group at the Arenberg campus. Zhang is also a member of the Materials Science Division and Leuven.AM – KU Leuven Institute for Additive Manufacturing, and serves on the Faculty Councils of Engineering Sciences and Medicine as well as the Departmental Council for Materials Science.
Dr. Zhang's research focuses on advanced biomaterials for dental applications, with particular expertise in zirconia ceramics, additive manufacturing, and dental implant technology. Their work spans the development of novel ceramic materials, surface modification techniques, and 3D printing methodologies for dental restorations. Zhang investigates the mechanical properties, optical characteristics, and biocompatibility of dental materials, with emphasis on improving the reliability and performance of zirconia-based dental implants and restorations. Research areas include translucency optimization, aging resistance, and manufacturing processes for dental ceramics.
Analysis of Zhang's recent publications reveals a strong focus on the intersection of materials science and dentistry, particularly in advancing zirconia ceramic technology. Their work addresses key challenges in dental materials including the balance between mechanical strength and translucency, aging resistance, and manufacturing precision. The research demonstrates a consistent trajectory toward developing more reliable, aesthetic, and functional dental biomaterials through innovative material processing and characterization approaches.
