Federico Varese is a Professor of Criminology at Sciences Po in Paris and an Associate Senior Research Fellow at the University of Oxford. He is a leading scholar in organized crime studies, focusing on Russian mafia dynamics, transnational crime networks, and cybercrime governance. Previously the Head of Department at Oxford, he has held visiting roles at Yale, City University of Hong Kong, and Milan University.
His academic journey includes degrees from Bologna, Cambridge, and Oxford Universities. Varese is a past Editor of Global Crime and serves on the editorial board of The British Journal of Criminology. His research explores criminal governance structures, mafia migration patterns, and the socio-political dimensions of illicit markets.
Notable works include The Russian Mafia (2001), Mafias on the Move (2011), and Mafia Life (2018), translated into eight languages. His work bridges academic rigor with public engagement, featured in outlets like The Economist, NY Times, and BBC.
Current projects examine cybercrime markets, Russian mafia activities, and the governance of organized gangs in the UK. Varese has received prestigious awards for his contributions to organized crime research, including the 2012 Outstanding Publication Award and the 2001 Hewett Book Prize.
