Dr. Fatima T. Husain serves as Professor in Speech and Hearing Science at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, with dual appointments in the College of Applied Health Sciences (where she holds the position of Associate Dean) and the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology. Her research bridges clinical audiology and advanced neuroimaging to investigate auditory disorders.
Her primary research focuses on:
- Neurobiological mechanisms of tinnitus
- Hearing loss-induced brain structural changes
- Neurochemical correlates (GABA/glutamate) in auditory disorders
- Misophonia and associated comorbidities
- Population-level interactions between hearing impairment and mental health
- Advanced neuroimaging techniques for auditory system analysis
Husain's recent publications demonstrate a cohesive trajectory using structural MRI, neurochemical analysis, and large-scale epidemiological data to unravel tinnitus pathophysiology. Her work consistently examines how hearing loss severity modulates neural reorganization and comorbid psychiatric conditions, with growing emphasis on population health implications through NHANES-based studies. The integration of cyclicity analysis in hemodynamic research represents her innovative methodological approach.
Based at the Beckman Institute (2355 Beckman Institute, 405 North Mathews Avenue, Urbana, IL 61801), she maintains active neuroimaging research through institutional affiliations while advancing academic leadership as Associate Dean.
