Fatima Farina is an Associate Professor of Sociology of Economic Processes and Work at the Department of Economics, Society, and Politics (DESP) at the University of Urbino Carlo Bo. With a distinguished career spanning multiple decades, she has established herself as a leading scholar in gender studies, military sociology, and sociology of work. Her research focuses on the intersection of gender, work, and political participation, with particular attention to women's experiences in traditionally male-dominated institutions.
Her research interests include:
- Gender Studies, with focus on gender-based violence and feminist theory
- Sociology of the Military, examining women's integration and experiences
- Urban Sociology, analyzing social dynamics in urban settings
- Sociology of Work, studying labor market trends and work-life balance
- Political Sociology, particularly women's political participation
Professor Farina's recent work has examined the impact of multiple crises on work patterns, with particular attention to gender dimensions. Her research reveals how contemporary polycrises (economic, health, climate) have reshaped work dynamics, often exacerbating gender inequalities while also creating new spaces for resistance and transformation. She has documented how women navigate fragmented life paths in what she terms the 'familistic sunset' - the decline of traditional family support structures.
Her scholarship on military sociology has been particularly influential, examining the 'new gender military regime' through the experiences of Italian military women in Afghanistan. This work challenges simplistic notions of gender integration in military settings, revealing complex processes of assimilation and resistance.
Professor Farina has received recognition for her extensive research on women's political participation in Italy, documenting territorial differences in female political representation and analyzing how elected women perceive and enact gender equality agendas. Her work has been instrumental in understanding the limitations of 'pink quotas' as solutions to gender imbalance in political systems.
She has supervised numerous research projects on gender-based violence, particularly focusing on university settings. Her fieldwork has revealed how gender violence permeates everyday relationships and spaces, often remaining unspoken but widely experienced by women students.
Professor Farina is actively involved in several research networks and regularly presents her work at international conferences including the European Sociological Association and the International Sociological Association World Congress.
