Fatih Erdem Baştan

Fatih Erdem Baştan is an Assistant Professor at Sakarya University's Engineering Faculty, Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering. He serves as Group Leader at BIO-TESLAB and is a senior researcher at the Thermal Spray Research and Development Laboratory (TESLAB). Currently, he is also working as a postdoctoral research fellow at the Institute of Biomaterials, FAU Erlangen-Nüremberg, with a project funded by TÜBİTAK.

Dr. Baştan's educational background includes a BS in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering from Kocaeli University (2009), an M.Sc from Sakarya University (2012), and a Ph.D. from Sakarya University (2018) with a dissertation on "Producing and Characterization of Thermal Sprayable Strontium Ion Substituted Hydroxyapatite Powder via Spray Drying". He also spent a year as a visiting researcher at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg (2016-2017).

His research focuses on biomaterials, particularly hydroxyapatite and bioglass for biomedical applications. Dr. Baştan specializes in the synthesis, modification, and characterization of ceramic powders and coatings. His expertise spans powder materials, biomaterials, dental materials, coatings, and biomimetic hierarchical materials. He has extensive experience with advanced laboratory equipment including XRD, SEM, TG-DTA, DSC, and FTIR for material characterization.

Dr. Baştan's publication record includes 18 SCI-indexed articles with over 610 citations and an H-index of 9 on Google Scholar, along with 5 international conference proceedings and 3 government-funded projects. His recent work shows a strong focus on hydroxyapatite-based biomaterials, composite coatings, and 3D-printed bone scaffolds, with increasing attention to antibacterial properties and electrical conductivity in tissue engineering applications.

Dr. Baştan has been involved in multiple research projects, including a project supported by the Republic of Turkey, Ministry of Development, entitled "The Increasing Capacity and Modernization of the Orthopaedic Implant Coating Production Facility for In Vivo Applications". His work at TESLAB and BIO-TESLAB focuses on developing advanced biomaterials for orthopedic and dental applications, with particular expertise in thermal spray techniques and electrophoretic deposition for creating functional coatings.

His laboratory capabilities include nanoparticle synthesis, powder/granule production, thermal spray infrastructure, and comprehensive characterization facilities including particle size and density measurement, thermal analysis, FTIR, SEM, and XRD.
