Farzana Tanima is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Business at the University of Wollongong (UOW). She holds a PhD from Victoria University of Wellington (2015) and a Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) in Accounting and Finance (2009). Her academic journey includes roles as Assistant Lecturer (2010–2016) and Lecturer (2016–2017) at VUW before joining UOW in 2017. Her teaching focuses on financial and management accounting, complemented by studies on accounting’s social and political contexts at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
Research interests center on dialogic accounting and accountability practices in developing countries, particularly Bangladesh. Key themes include microfinance-NGO dynamics, women’s empowerment, and participatory action research. She has explored the intersections of poverty, education access, and alternative accounting frameworks to empower marginalized groups. Recent work extends to sustainability in global industries, critical race theory applications, and decolonizing methodologies.
Her grants include Microfinance and Women’s Empowerment (2023) and Targeted Researcher Support initiatives. Professional memberships include the Alternative Accounting Research Network, Center for Social and Environmental Accounting Research, and AFAANZ. Farzana actively engages in global academic networks, advocating for socially responsive accounting practices through collaborative research and policy advocacy.
