Farshid Hajir is a Professor and Senior Vice Provost & Dean of Undergraduate Education at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. He holds a Ph.D. from MIT (1993) and an A.B. from Princeton University (1988). His research focuses on algebraic number theory, including units and class groups of number fields, Galois theory, elliptic curves, and L-functions. He also explores applications in coding theory, cryptography, and mathematics education.
As a faculty member, Hajir has served as Undergraduate Program Director, Associate Department Head, and Department Head in the Mathematics & Statistics Department. He has held administrative roles in the Provost’s office, including Senior Vice Provost for Academic Affairs and currently leads Undergraduate Education.
His teaching spans courses like Abstract Algebra, Number Theory, and Geometry, emphasizing rigorous mathematical reasoning and interdisciplinary connections. He actively contributes to academic service, including roles on the Faculty Senate and local education committees. His research has produced over 30 publications, including works on class field towers, restricted ramification, and elliptic units.
