Fantasy Lozada

Fantasy Lozada is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), conducting developmental and community-based research on emotional experiences and liberation among Black and Brown populations, with specific focus on African American and Latino/a/e/x communities. Her work addresses how racial bias weaponizes emotions and restricts emotional access.

Lozada's research examines cultural and racial factors shaping emotional development through three interconnected approaches: within-group studies of Black and Brown communities, publication in developmental and affective science, and community partnerships translating findings for educators and service providers. Her work centers emotional liberation—the ability to experience full emotional range without fear of racialized misinterpretation.

Analysis of recent publications (2023-2025) reveals consistent focus on ethnic-racial identity development, emotion socialization across family and community contexts, racial discrimination's mental health impacts, and socioemotional competence in Black and Latinx youth. Key methodological trends include longitudinal designs, mixed-methods approaches, and community-engaged frameworks examining how cultural contexts shape emotional experiences and coping strategies.
