Faiz Ahmed is the Joukowsky Family Distinguished Associate Professor of Modern Middle Eastern History at Brown University's Department of History. His research focuses on Ottoman legal history, constitutionalism, Afghanistan's sociolegal dynamics, and transregional connections between the Ottoman Empire and the Americas. He holds a PhD in History from UC Berkeley and a JD from UC Law San Francisco.
Key research projects include Afghanistan Rising (awarded the 2018 John F. Richards Prize) and his forthcoming Ottoman Americana. His peer-reviewed articles appear in journals such as International Journal of Middle East Studies and Law and History Review. Ahmed has held prestigious fellowships at institutions including Harvard Law School (2023–24), Koç University, and the American Research Institute in Turkey.
He co-organizes Brown's Legal History Workshop and Legal Studies collaborative. Office hours are Mondays/Wednesdays 1:45–2:45PM. Not accepting new PhD advisees at this time.
