Faith Hillis is a Professor of Russian History and the College at the University of Chicago. She serves as Director of the Center for East European and Russian/Eurasian Studies (CEERES) and holds faculty roles in the Greenberg Center for Jewish Studies, Digital Studies, and the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures. Educated at Princeton and Yale (PhD 2009), her research focuses on modern Russia’s political culture, empires, and digital humanities. Her work explores Russian nationalism, transnational networks, and the intersection of history with modern geopolitics.
Her research has been supported by ACLS, NEH, and the Cullman Center for Scholars and Writers. Key publications include Utopia’s Discontents (2021, Vucinich Prize winner) and Children of Rus’ (2013, Choice Academic Title). She investigates topics such as the origins of antisemitic conspiracy theories, émigré communities, and digital cartography. Teaching spans Russian/European history, digital methods, and imperial studies.
Hillis frequently engages with media on Russian-Ukrainian relations and historical context for contemporary conflicts. Her digital projects, like mapping émigré publications, highlight interdisciplinary approaches to historical analysis.
