Fabrice Gatuingt is a Professor and lecturer at the Laboratory of Mechanics Paris-Saclay (LMPS) at Université Paris-Saclay. He serves as Deputy Director of Education at the Graduate School Engineering and Systems Sciences at Université Paris-Saclay. LMPS, created in early 2022 through the merger of the Mechanics and Technology Laboratory (LMT) and the Mechanics of Soils, Structures and Materials Laboratory (MSSMat), comprises over 200 researchers across four teams including the Structures, Materials, Environment: Interactions and Risks (OMEIR) team where Gatuingt conducts his research.
Fabrice Gatuingt specializes in concrete structures and predicts the behavior of buildings under extreme loads, whether natural or accidental. His research focuses on predicting failure in concrete structures subjected to fast dynamics, with particular emphasis on structural response to extreme events such as earthquakes or impacts. Since 2017, he has been a member of the scientific council of the French School of Concrete and has represented France in the International Federation for Structural Concrete since 2016.
Gatuingt's work gained significant importance after the September 11, 2001 attacks, as questions arose about the resistance of sensitive industrial installations to extreme impacts. His research involves developing tools to evaluate the resistance of reinforced concrete structures, including airport runway slabs subjected to potential weapons impact. He utilizes both experimental methods, including a concrete plant at ENS Paris-Saclay, and numerical simulations to predict structural behavior under exceptional loads, accounting for concrete degradation over time.
On the educational front, Gatuingt is piloting the creation of a Master's track in Civil Engineering at Université Paris-Saclay. As Deputy Director of Education for the Graduate School of Engineering and Systems Sciences, his mission is to structure and coordinate the educational offerings across ten master's tracks involving different entities of Université Paris-Saclay, representing approximately 1,500 students. He is actively involved in creating a sense of belonging among the university's engineering community through participation in back-to-school meetings, open days, seminars, and symposiums.
