Fabienne Poulain is an Associate Professor at the University of South Carolina within the College of Arts and Sciences Department of Biological Sciences. She leads the Poulain Lab, focusing on neurodevelopmental mechanisms using zebrafish as a model organism.
Her research investigates:
- Axon guidance and topographic map formation in the visual system
- Selective axon degeneration as a refinement mechanism
- Trans-axonal signaling in neural circuit assembly
- Mitochondrial dynamics in neuronal development
Recent publications highlight her work in:
- Axon pruning mechanisms (2023)
- Mitochondrial regulation in regeneration (2023)
- Cell adhesion roles in circuit formation (2022)
- Retinotectal map dynamics (2021)
- Proteoglycan signaling pathways (2015-2023)
Scientific recognition includes the Lindler Faculty Fellow award. Current lab members include graduate students Trevor Moreland and Brian Kessler, postdoc Lexie Schmidt, and alumni now in positions at institutions like GSK and MUSC. Her lab is affiliated with the Center for Childhood Neurotherapeutics and the Zebrafish International Resource Center.
