Prof. Fabian Leendertz is a Professor for One Health at the University of Greifswald and Founding Director of the Helmholtz Institute for One Health (HIOH) in Greifswald. He leads research on zoonotic pathogens, including Ebola and SARS-CoV-2 origins, and is a WHO expert on emerging diseases. His work integrates microbiology, veterinary medicine, and public health.
- Education: Veterinary Medicine from the University of Budapest and Free University Berlin (2005 PhD).
- Habilitation in Microbiology (2016) from Free University Berlin.
Research focuses on zoonotic disease emergence, primate diseases, and One Health strategies. Notable achievements include discovering new anthrax pathogens and describing leprosy in wild apes. He chairs the HIOH, advises UNEP and German government initiatives, and serves on WHO expert groups.
- Awards: UNEP's 2020 Champion of the Earth Award for One Health advocacy.
Labs/Teams: Heads the HIOH and previously led the Robert Koch Institute's Project Group on Highly Pathogenic Pathogens (2012–2021). Collaborates globally on outbreak investigations and zoonosis control.
