Fabian Helmrich is a DPhil Researcher at the University of Oxford's Faculty of Linguistics, Philology and Phonetics. He holds a BA in Russian and Serbian/Croatian from UCL School of Slavonic and East European Studies (SSEES) and an MPhil in Linguistics, Philology and Phonetics from Oxford. His research focuses on endangered languages and language contact phenomena, particularly Istro-Romanian (Vlashki/Zheyanski), a Romance variety in Croatia influenced by Slavic and Venetian languages.

His primary research investigates how contact with Chakavian Croatian and Venetian shaped unique features in Istro-Romanian's verbal aspect system. He employs corpus methods and Klein's aspect theory, aiming to digitize and analyze historical recordings from the ISTROX project. Additional interests include queer linguistics, Balkan Sprachbund dynamics, and language-nation intersections. His publications explore topics like linguistic borrowing in the Danube region and Slavic oral traditions.
