Fabian Alfie is a Professor of Italian and member of the General Faculty at the University of Arizona's College of Humanities. He has been affiliated with the institution since 1997, following postdoctoral teaching at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee. His academic leadership includes serving as Department Head of French and Italian from 2010 to 2015, during which both programs saw significant growth in majors. Alfie holds a Ph.D. in Italian Literature from the University of Wisconsin, Madison (1995).
His research specializes in medieval comic literature, with notable works on Cecco Angiolieri and Dante Alighieri. He explores how medieval 'blaming' poetry functioned as ethical discourse, contrasting with 'praise' literature. Recent scholarly contributions include a 2011 monograph on Dante's poetic exchanges with Forese Donati and a 2015 translation of Rustico Filippi's works.
Recipient of the 2008 COH Distinguished Teaching Award, Alfie emphasizes pedagogical innovation and community engagement. He co-organizes the annual 'All-Night Reading of Dante's Inferno' with St. Philips in the Hills Episcopal Church and serves on the board of the Humanities Seminars Program, leading public seminars on Dante's Divine Comedy.
Alfie's interdisciplinary outreach includes radio and TV appearances discussing medieval literature, and he maintains active participation in both academic conferences and public humanities initiatives.
