Francesco Candeloro Billari is a Full Professor of Demography at Bocconi University in Milan, serving as Rector since November 2022. Previously, he held leadership roles as Dean of the Faculty, Head of the Department of Sociology at the University of Oxford, and Head of the Independent Research Group on the Demography of Early Adulthood at the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research. He is a Fellow of the British Academy and affiliated with the Population Studies Center at the University of Pennsylvania.
His research focuses on fertility and family change, life course analysis, population forecasting, digitalization’s impact on demography, and comparative surveys. He has published in demography, economics, epidemiology, and sociology journals, and leads an European Research Council (ERC) Advanced Grant project.
Billari has received the prestigious Clogg Award (2012) from the Population Association of America. His work bridges demographic theory with policy applications, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches across social sciences.
Professional affiliations include presidency and secretarial roles in the European Association for Population Studies. His recent publications address societal aging, policy design informed by demographic trends, and digital transformation’s role in modern demographics.
