FJ Bruggeman

Prof. FJ Bruggeman is a Full Professor in the Faculty of Science at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, holding positions in both the Systems Biology department and AIMMS. His research focuses on unraveling microbial growth mechanisms and metabolic regulation through systems biology and biophysics approaches. He leads a lab specializing in experimental microbial physiology, computational modeling (including stochastic theory and differential equations), and fluorescence microscopy techniques.

His teaching involves courses on experimental/theoretical systems biology and biophysics for microorganisms. Key achievements include the University Research Chair (2014-2019) and NWO VIDI grant (2012-2017). Current research emphasizes metabolic network modeling, genetic circuit design, and microbial adaptation strategies. His lab develops tools like StochPy software for stochastic modeling.
