F. Carson Mencken is a Professor of Sociology at Baylor University. His research focuses on civic engagement, religiosity, and economic development, particularly in rural contexts. He has been funded by USDA grants and agencies like the Tennessee Valley Authority and the John Templeton Foundation. Mencken holds a Ph.D. from Louisiana State University (1994), an M.A. (1989), and a B.S. from the College of Charleston (1987).
His work examines the intersection of religion, crime perception, and financial systems. Recent projects include analyzing banking impacts on rural businesses and the psychological effects of religiosity on fear of crime. He has authored over 40 publications, including the book Paranormal America (2017), exploring cultural beliefs about supernatural phenomena.
