Eyal Benvenisti is the Whewell Professor of International Law at the University of Cambridge's Faculty of Law and Director of the Lauterpacht Centre for International Law. He previously held the Anny and Paul Yanowicz Professorship at Tel Aviv University and the Hersch Lauterpacht Chair at the Hebrew University. He is a Global Professor of Law at NYU and has taught at Yale, Harvard, and other leading institutions.
His research focuses on international law, constitutional law, administrative law, and global governance. Key areas include state accountability to foreign stakeholders, laws of occupation, democratic governance in global contexts, and transnational legal frameworks. He led the ERC-funded GlobalTrust project on sovereign accountability and contributed to landmark works like Sovereigns as Trustees of Humanity and The Law of Global Governance.
Benvenisti has authored over 150 articles and 10 books. His awards include the Humboldt Research Award and membership in the Israeli Academy of Sciences. He serves on editorial boards of top journals like the American Journal of International Law and co-edits the British Yearbook of International Law.
His work bridges legal theory and practice, addressing contemporary challenges like pandemic governance, autonomous weapons, and transnational judicial coordination. He advocates for legal frameworks that balance state sovereignty with global accountability mechanisms.
