Dr Ewan Campbell is a part-time Senior Lecturer in Archaeology at the University of Glasgow, specializing in early medieval archaeology of Atlantic north-west Europe. His research focuses on inter-disciplinary studies of Celtic-speaking regions, trade networks, artefact analysis, and the origins of the Scottish kingdom. He co-directs the Strathearn Environs and Royal Forteviot (SERF) project, examining early medieval Scotland’s development.
Education: PhD in early medieval archaeology from Cardiff University (1991), followed by a research post there before joining Glasgow. Previously worked in commercial archaeology.
Research Interests:
- Interdisciplinary approaches to Celtic Atlantic regions
- Trade and economy in early medieval societies
- Settlement studies and artefact analysis (pottery, glass, metalwork)
- Origins of the Scottish kingdom
- Excavation projects in Scotland, Wales, Jordan, and beyond
Projects: Currently involved in the Assembling Iona project and the Rhynie Environs Project, alongside the SERF initiative. Recent work includes cross-disciplinary studies on the psychology of archaeology.
Teaching: Archaeology of Europe and the Mediterranean (Level 2), Celtic and Viking archaeology (MLitt), and early medieval artefacts (MLitt option).
Supervision: Mentors postgraduate students researching Anglo-Saxon artefacts, spectral photography for archaeological finds, and Insular art patterns.
Affiliations: Trustee of Kilmartin House Museum and member of the Whithorn Research Committee.
