Ewa Jacewicz

Ewa Jacewicz is a Research Professor in the Department of Speech and Hearing Science at The Ohio State University's College of Arts and Sciences. She holds a Ph.D. in Germanic Linguistics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (1999) and has been at Ohio State since 2000 as a NIH Postdoctoral Research Fellow, progressing through roles like Research Scientist and Research Assistant Professor before becoming Research Associate Professor in 2015. Her research focuses on speech science, including regional and generational dialect variation, speech development in children, and phonological processing in dyslexia.

She co-directs the Speech Perception and Acoustics Laboratory with Dr. Robert A. Fox and has led multiple NIH-funded projects. Her work emphasizes acoustic and perceptual characteristics of speech in diverse populations, including non-native accented speakers and children with dyslexia. She serves as Associate Editor for the Journal of the Acoustical Society of America and previously for the Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing Research. Her lab's research spans vowel dynamics, stop consonant voicing, and the role of high-frequency speech components in communication.

Key research interests include sociolinguistic influences on speech production and perception, cross-dialectal vowel variations, and the impact of cognitive load on speech processing. Her studies often integrate neuroimaging techniques (e.g., fNIRS) to assess listening effort and brain-to-brain synchrony during communication. She also investigates how dialect and gender cues affect speech intelligibility in multitalker environments.

Ewa collaborates widely, contributing to special issues on high-frequency speech analysis and vocal identity perception. Her work bridges clinical applications (e.g., dyslexia assessment) with theoretical linguistics, emphasizing both empirical and computational approaches to speech science.
