Dr Evi Margaritis is an Associate Professor at The Cyprus Institute's Science and Technology in Archaeology and Culture Research Center (STARC). Specializing in archaeobotany, she focuses on Mediterranean plant domestication, early agricultural practices, and resource management in prehistoric societies. Her work integrates environmental, archaeological, and historical data to explore socio-economic dynamics in regions like Greece, Cyprus, and Jordan.
Education: BA (University of Athens), MSc Environmental Archaeology & Palaeoeconomy (University of Sheffield), PhD (University of Cambridge). Postdoctoral research included Marie Curie Fellowship-funded studies at Cambridge.
Research Interests:
- Archaeobotanical analysis of olive and grape domestication
- Foodways and subsistence strategies in prehistoric communities
- Mediterranean island economies and sustainability
- Ritual landscapes and material culture of Bronze Age societies
Awards: Marie Curie Fellowship (2018), Harvard Centre of Hellenic Studies Fellowship (2019), Research Promotion Foundation Excellence Grant (2018).
Leadership: Assistant Director of the Cambridge Keros Excavation Project, organizer of the Cambridge-CyI Archaeological Field School, and coordinator of Erasmus+ programs with European universities. She leads interdisciplinary teams on projects like the H2020-funded PROMISED Twinning Initiative.
Labs/Teams: STARC Research Group, collaborating with Universities of Cambridge, Leuven, and multiple Mediterranean institutions. Active in creating archaeobotanical training programs for early-career researchers.
