Dr. Angelos Hadjikoumis is a zooarchaeologist affiliated with The Cyprus Institute’s Science & Technology in Archaeology and Culture Research Center (STARC). He holds a PhD in zooarchaeology from the University of Sheffield, following a BA in History and Archaeology from the University of Athens and an MSc in Environmental Archaeology and Palaeoeconomy. His research focuses on the zooarchaeology of circum-Mediterranean and SW Asian regions, exploring animal domestication, husbandry practices, stable isotope analysis, dental microwear, and ethnozooarchaeology. Currently, he leads Project RECEN800, integrating archaeological, climatic, and historical data to inform sustainable environmental management strategies.
Key research interests include the origins of animal domestication, seasonal husbandry practices, and the application of multi-proxy analyses (e.g., isotopes, microwear) to reconstruct human-animal interactions. His projects emphasize interdisciplinary methodologies, particularly in Cyprus, to address contemporary environmental challenges through historical ecological resilience studies.
Recent publications highlight studies on medieval animal remains in Nicosia, wild boar hunting strategies, and traditional livestock management in Cyprus and Iberia. His work bridges archaeology, ethnoarchaeology, and environmental science, offering insights into long-term human-environment dynamics.
