Evelyne Lagrange

Evelyne Lagrange is a University Professor of Public Law at the University of Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, affiliated with the Institute for Research in International and European Law at the Sorbonne (IREDIES) and the Sorbonne Law School Research (EDS). She is actively involved in research, doctoral supervision, and international academic collaboration, including a delegation to the CNRS at Aix-Marseille University and roles at the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law.

Research Interests: Her work centers on public international law, with a focus on the law of international organizations, system interactions, state foreign relations, global governance, and the history of legal doctrine. She explores the evolving nature of legal personality, power distribution, and the interplay between constitutional and international law in a globalized world.

The trends in her recent publications reflect a sustained engagement with core issues in international legal theory, state and organizational responsibility, investment law, human rights, and the structural challenges of global governance. Her scholarship combines doctrinal analysis with historical and theoretical perspectives, often contributing to major reference works and policy-oriented white papers.

Scientific Awards and Recognition:

• Supervised multiple award-winning PhD theses, including recipients of the Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne Thesis Prize (2017, 2018), the SFDI Thesis Prize (2024), and several other prestigious academic awards.
• External Scientific Member of the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law (since 2016).
• Member of the Advisory Board of the Max Planck Encyclopedia of International Law (since 2021).

Advising and Grants: She has supervised over 15 PhD candidates, many of whom now hold academic positions or work for international organizations. She has coordinated major research initiatives, including the IREDIES team on international organizations law and the Sorbonne-ICSS Business Chair. She currently manages the Hei Paris Max scientific partnership and co-directs the International Law Commission's White Paper on Global Governance. Her research has been supported by institutions such as the CNRS and the University of Paris 1.

Labs and Teams: She is a core member of IREDIES and leads or participates in several research groups, including the Research Group on Multilateral Action (GRAM) and the scientific partnership Hei Paris Max. She also represents her university at the Interdisciplinary Center for Studies and Research on Germany (CIERA) and sits on the Scientific Council of the Centre Marc Bloch in Berlin.
