Evelyn M. Simien is a Professor of Political Science at the University of Connecticut, where she also serves as Director of the Africana Studies Institute. She holds affiliations with Africana Studies, Women’s Gender and Sexuality Studies, and American Studies. Dr. Simien earned her Ph.D. from Purdue University and specializes in African American politics, public opinion, and political behavior.
Her research explores intersectional approaches to political analysis, focusing on Black feminist consciousness, symbolic empowerment in electoral politics, and race-gendered experiences. Major themes include historical analysis of racial-sexual violence, voter mobilization through identity politics, and critical examinations of representation in U.S. elections.
Dr. Simien has authored four books: Black Feminist Voices in Politics (2006), Gender and Lynching: The Politics of Memory (2011), Historic Firsts: How Symbolic Empowerment Changes U.S. Politics (2015), and Historic Firsts in U.S. Elections (2022). Her scholarship demonstrates consistent focus on how marginalized groups navigate political systems and claim representation.
