Evan Maina Mwangi is the Melville J. Herskovits Professor of African Studies and Professor of English at Northwestern University. He earned a First Class Honours degree and PhD in literature from the University of Nairobi. His research examines nationalism, gender, and sexuality in African literature, connecting local artistic expressions with global theoretical frameworks.
Mwangi's research specializations span:
- Postcolonial ethics in animal studies
- Queer theory in translation practices
- African metafiction and experimental literature
- Indigenous knowledge systems
- Cosmopolitanism in Indian Ocean cultures
He has authored six books including The Postcolonial Animal: African Literature and Posthuman Ethics (2019), which analyzes vegan philosophies in African texts, and Translation in African Contexts (2017), exploring gender-fluid adaptations of literary works. Current projects investigate global reinterpretations of Conrad’s Heart of Darkness and Indian Ocean intellectual traditions.
