Evan MacLean is an Associate Professor in the Department of Veterinary Science and Microbiology at the University of Arizona. His work focuses on canine cognition, oxytocin biology, and the human-animal bond. He leads research projects such as the Dog Aging Project and the ManyDogs initiative, exploring topics like service dog efficacy, aging processes in dogs, and the genetic foundations of social behavior. His lab studies endocrine mechanisms (e.g., oxytocin and cortisol) and behavioral traits in dogs, with applications to veterinary medicine, mental health, and animal welfare.
Research interests span canine cognition development, oxytocin’s role in social bonding, and translational studies on aging. Key areas include understanding how oxytocin assays function, evaluating service dogs for veterans and children with autism, and leveraging genetic insights to improve working dog selection. MacLean collaborates with multidisciplinary teams and emphasizes translational research bridging basic science and practical applications.
