Eva Schwarz serves as an Associate Professor and Program Coordinator in the Department of Culture and Learning at Södertörn University. Employed at the Center for Practical Knowledge since February 2010, she specializes in the theory of practical knowledge with a focus on phenomenological approaches to professional contexts including police and educational settings.
She earned her PhD in Philosophy from the University of Graz, Austria (2007), where her Austrian Science Funds (FWF)-supported thesis "Subjektivität und Perspektivität" developed a phenomenological perspective on subjectivity based on Edmund Husserl's theory of intentionality. Her academic foundation integrates classical philosophical frameworks with contemporary professional applications.
Schwarz's research centers on collectivity, professional judgment, and affectivity, drawing extensively on Edmund Husserl, Maurice Merleau-Ponty, and Hannah Arendt. She examines how individuals and groups navigate ethical dilemmas through embodied cognition and emotional practices. Current investigations focus on the affective dimensions of professional judgment in high-stakes environments like police education.
Her work demonstrates consistent external funding through Östersjöstiftelsen, supporting three major projects: the ongoing "The Cultivation of force" (2025-2028) analyzing emotional regulation in Swedish and German police training; the completed "Collective Phronesis" (2017-2020) studying collective practical knowledge among teachers and police officers; and "Being and Becoming" exploring phenomenological dimensions of preschool education across Sweden and Germany. These projects establish cross-national research collaborations while advancing theoretical frameworks in practical philosophy.
