Eva-Maria Schoetz is an Assistant Professor of Physics and Biology at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). Her research explores the intersection of physical principles and living systems, focusing on biomechanics, asexual reproduction, and behavior/memory using freshwater planarians and hydras as model organisms.
- Education:
- Ph.D. from Technical University of Dresden, Germany
- Postdoctoral work as a Lewis-Sigler Fellow at Princeton University
Research: Dr. Schoetz investigates how structural and functional dynamics influence developmental processes, regeneration, and asexual reproduction in planarians and hydras. Her lab combines molecular biology with techniques like micro- and macrorheology, in vivo imaging, and force traction microscopy. A key focus is integrating stem cell biology, tissue mechanics, statistical physics, and evolutionary aging via long-term tracking of worm populations.
Scientific Recognition:
- Recipient of the Burroughs Wellcome Fund Career Award at the Scientific Interface (2011)
Her work bridges interdisciplinary fields to study regenerative capabilities and biological complexity across scales.
