Eva Jewell

Dr. Eva Jewell is an Anishinaabekwe Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology at Toronto Metropolitan University. Her work focuses on Indigenous perspectives of care, feminist care ethics, and community-based reclamation movements. She holds a Doctor of Social Sciences from Royal Roads University and contributes to Anishinaabe governance and research methodologies. Dr. Jewell co-authored annual status updates on the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's Calls to Action for the Yellowhead Institute (2019–2023). She is Research Director at Yellowhead Institute, an Affiliate at the Vanier Institute of the Family, and a Board Member of Indigenous Watchdog.

Her research emphasizes anti-oppressive, culturally relevant processes, particularly in analyzing care labor and Indigenous sovereignty. Notable works include exploring Indigenous feminist care ethics and the role of care in reclamation efforts. She teaches courses such as SOC 427 (Indigenous Perspectives on Canada) and SOC 580 (Indigenous Feminisms).

Dr. Jewell’s creative work includes the animated short Lily’s Story: The Feminization of Poverty (2021). Her publications span topics from Indigenous governance to mental health in urban communities, reflecting her commitment to decolonizing social science methodologies.
