Eugenio BURGIO is a Full Professor of Romance Philology and Linguistics (SSD FLMR-01/B) at the Department of Humanities, Ca' Foscari University of Venice, where he also serves as Director of the Interuniversity Center for Venetian Studies. His academic career spans several decades, beginning with teaching Romance Philology at the Faculty of Foreign Languages and Literatures from 1992-1993 as a researcher and lecturer.
His research interests encompass a wide range of medieval studies including Romance philology, hagiography in the vernacular, manuscript traditions, reception of medieval texts, and the relationship between texts and images in medieval contexts. He has produced significant scholarly editions of medieval texts and has contributed to understanding cultural exchanges between Europe and Asia through works on Marco Polo's travels.
BURGIO's recent publications demonstrate a consistent focus on medieval textual traditions, particularly surrounding Marco Polo's Milione, with an increasing emphasis on digital humanities approaches. His work shows expertise in manuscript cataloging, digital critical editions, and the intersection of text and visual representation in medieval travel literature.
He serves in editorial capacities for several scholarly journals including as co-director of Annals of Ca' Foscari, editor of Hagiographica and Quaderni veneti, and Chief Editor of the Western series of the Medieval and Modern Philologies series.
BURGIO actively participates in research projects, currently leading the Digital Ramusio 2.0 project (2023-2026) and collaborating on multiple initiatives related to medieval textual traditions, digital scholarly editing, and the study of Marco Polo's works. His research group frequently collaborates with scholars like Marina Buzzoni and Antonella Ghersetti.
As Director of the Interuniversity Center for Venetian Studies, BURGIO oversees research initiatives focused on Venetian cultural heritage, particularly examining Venice's historical role as a bridge between European and Asian cultures during the medieval and Renaissance periods.
