Eugene Smelyansky is an Assistant Professor of History at Washington State University (WSU), affiliated with the College of Arts and Sciences and the Department of History. He specializes in pre-modern European and Mediterranean history, focusing on medieval religious persecution, urban culture, and the persistence of medieval themes in modern media.

Research Interests: Dr. Smelyansky explores the persecution of medieval heretics (e.g., Waldensians), medieval urban environments, and the contemporary reinterpretation of medieval narratives in politics, literature, and digital media. His first monograph, *Heresy and Citizenship* (2020), examines heresy persecution in German cities, while his edited volume *The Intolerant Middle Ages* (2020) compiles primary sources on marginalized groups in medieval Europe. His current project, *Medievalisms and Russia* (forthcoming), analyzes medieval mythmaking in Russian nationalism and imperialism.
Dr. Smelyansky integrates world-historical perspectives into his teaching and research, emphasizing interdisciplinary connections between past and present.
