Eugen Barbu is a Principal Research Fellow at the University of Portsmouth, affiliated with the School of Medicine, Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences and the Institute of Biological and Biomedical Sciences. He is also part of the Food Cultures in Transition research cluster. With a background in organic chemistry and industry, he holds a Ph.D. in Chemistry from Romania and an Executive MBA (2011). His career includes roles as a Leverhulme Trust Fellow (2000) and Senior Lecturer in Romania before joining Portsmouth's permanent staff in 2001.
Research Focus: Dr. Barbu specializes in biomaterials, nanotechnology, and drug delivery systems. His work includes developing nanoparticulate carriers for brain delivery, polysaccharide nanoparticles, and antifouling materials. He leads the Biomaterials Research Laboratory, offering commercial expertise in material characterization and regional business collaboration.
Teaching & Mentorship: Teaches pharmaceutical chemistry and drug development across MPharm programs, supervising doctoral students on biomaterials and drug delivery. Active in curriculum design and final-year research projects.
Funding & Grants: Secured grants from BBSRC, UK charities, and EU for projects on drug delivery systems and nanotechnology. Extensive experience in project management and evaluation.
Innovations: Contributions include 3D-printed medicines, silver nanowire composites for antibacterial cements, and electrospun fibers for drug delivery. His work bridges academic research with industrial applications, emphasizing translational biomedical solutions.
