Etienne Hanelt is a political scientist and doctoral researcher at the University of Oxford's Centre for Socio-Legal Studies and Wolfson College. His research focuses on democratic backsliding in Central and Eastern Europe, EU politics, and judicial resilience. Advised by Professors Fernanda Pirie and Ezequiel González Ocantos, his thesis examines EU institutional decision-making during the rule of law crisis. He holds a re:constitution 2024/25 Fellowship and previously worked on an ERC-funded project at Masaryk University's Judicial Studies Institute.
Key research interests include subnational authoritarianism, computational social science methods, and mixed-method research designs. Recent work analyses coalition-building under Article 7 TEU and judicial co-optation in Hungary. He contributes to the Judicial Resilience Project at Verfassungsblog and presented findings at the HUN-REN Centre for Social Science in Budapest.
