Etienne Bourel is a Research Fellow in Cultural Anthropology and Development Sociology at Leiden University's Social and Behavioural Sciences faculty. His current research focuses on the social dynamics of the Ogooué-Ivindo forests in Gabon, exploring human-environment interactions and sustainable development frameworks. He holds a PhD from Lyon 2 University (France), awarded the 2023 Pierre Bouvier Prize for socioanthropology.
Previously (July 2023–May 2024), he conducted interdisciplinary research at Paris's Musée de l'Homme examining human-primate interactions in zoos, collaborating with primatologists and citizen science initiatives. His work bridges anthropology, environmental studies, and policy analysis.
Key research themes include forest governance in Central Africa, labor practices in extractive industries, and subjectivations of work. He co-edited special issues on wage labor in African Studies (Cahiers d’études africaines) and subjectivations in labor (Journal des anthropologues), demonstrating methodological innovation.
Bourel actively contributes to academic communities as editorial board member of Terrain and Journal des anthropologues, and co-administrator of Le Tamis (Marseille). He also engages with digital scholarship through Hypothèses' scientific blog platform.
