Ethan Basch

Ethan Basch, MD, MSc, is the Richard M. Goldberg Distinguished Professor in Medical Oncology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine, Professor of Public Health in the Department of Health Policy and Management at the Gillings School of Global Public Health, and Director of the Cancer Outcomes Research Program at the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center. He also serves as Physician-in-Chief at the North Carolina Basnight Cancer Hospital and is an Associate Editor of the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA).

Research Interests:

Dr. Basch is a medical oncologist and health services researcher whose work centers on developing and implementing patient-reported outcome (PRO) tools in cancer clinical research and routine care. His clinical expertise is prostate cancer, while his research focuses on patient-reported outcomes, drug regulatory policy, and comparative effectiveness research. He has led the development of the National Cancer Institute’s PRO-CTCAE system for monitoring patient-reported adverse events in clinical trials.

Laboratories & Teams:

Dr. Basch leads the Cancer Outcomes Research Program at UNC Lineberger, which recently launched the Patient-Reported Outcomes Center of Excellence. This center fosters interdisciplinary collaboration to advance the science and implementation of PROs in oncology practice across the United States.
