Esther D. Rothblum is a Professor of Women’s Studies at San Diego State University and a Distinguished Visiting Scholar at the Williams Institute (UCLA). Her work focuses on LGBTQ mental health, same-sex relationships, and family dynamics, particularly through her landmark CUPPLES longitudinal study comparing same-sex couples with heterosexual siblings. She holds a B.A. from Smith College, M.S. and Ph.D. in clinical psychology from Rutgers University, and a postdoctoral fellowship in psychosocial epidemiology from Yale University.
Key research areas include queer identity formation, asexuality studies, butch/femme gender roles, and the mental health impacts of legal and social policies on LGBTQ families. She has pioneered studies on donor-conceived offspring of lesbian parents and the psychological effects of anti-LGBTQ+ oppression. As the founding editor of the Journal of Lesbian Studies and former president of APA’s Division 44, she has advanced LGBTQ psychological research and advocacy.
Her work bridges clinical psychology, public health, and sociological perspectives, addressing issues such as parental responses to coming out, transgender parenting demographics, and the evolving Q in LGBTQ identities. Though no awards are explicitly listed, her editorial and leadership roles reflect significant academic recognition.
