Ester Barinaga is a Professor in Entrepreneurship at Lund University School of Economics and Management (LUSEM), affiliated with the Sten K. Johnson Centre for Entrepreneurship. Her research focuses on grassroots innovations, community currencies, social entrepreneurship, and sustainable economic systems. She actively collaborates with global initiatives like the Kenyan community currencies project in Kisumu and contributes to policy discussions on municipal currencies in contexts like Rio de Janeiro.
Her academic journey includes a PhD from 2002 and extensive teaching in social innovation, including courses like 'Re-imagining Capitalism' and 'Digital Monies for a Sustainable Future.' She balances research with practical engagement, such as founding the social venture Förorten i Centrum, which used mural art to address urban marginalization.
Ester's work intersects with UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly addressing inequality, climate action, and sustainable cities.
