Estelle Venter is a Professor of Veterinary Education at James Cook University (JCU), Australia, since 2017. Previously, she held academic positions at the University of Pretoria, South Africa, including Professor (2013–2017), Associate Professor (1997–2012), and Senior Lecturer (1988–1996). Her research focuses on arboviral diseases such as lumpy skin disease (LSD), Rift Valley fever (RVF), and bluetongue (BT), with a strong emphasis on viral diagnostics, pathogenesis, and control strategies. She has supervised over 50 postgraduate students and co-authored 102 peer-reviewed articles, achieving an h-index of 30. Her work includes collaborations with international institutions like the Pirbright Institute (UK) and Utrecht University (Netherlands).
Education: BSc (Microbiology & Biochemistry) with distinction, MSc (Microbiology/Virology), and PhD (Virology/BTV diagnostics) from South African universities. She has secured grants from NRF, EU DEFEND, and others for LSD/BT research. Awards include Top 10 Senior Researcher (2012).
Research interests span orbiviruses, tick vectors, and flaviviruses, with contributions to vaccine development and disease surveillance.
