Estela Fidalgo Garra

Estela Fidalgo Garra is a predoctoral researcher at the University of Santiago de Compostela, funded by a Xunta de Galicia contract. Her work focuses on pragmalinguistics and sociolinguistics, particularly (dis)courtesy theory and its intersection with cultural change and gender studies in contemporary Galicia.

• Education: BA in Galician Language and Literature (2020), Master's in Teaching Secondary Education (2021), both from USC.

Her dissertation, (Dis)courtesy and Cultural Change: The Piropo, supervised by Elisa Fernández Rei, explores compliments as evaluative acts and their role in image threat during interactions. Recent presentations include analyses of humor in gender inequality perpetuation, English language influence on Galician youth, and language policy debates regarding Galician identity.

Her publications in The Conversation and conference presentations highlight language policy, monoglossic ideologies, and critical discourse analysis. She received the 2021 Research Initiation Grant for Master's Students from Banco Santander.
