معرفی
Dr. Esra Bulbul is a Lecturer at the Department of Physics, Faculty of Physics, Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, and a tenured W2 Research Group Leader at the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics (MPE) in the High Energy Astrophysics Group. She serves as lead scientist for cluster science and cosmology within the SRG/eROSITA collaboration and chairs the consortium's clusters and cosmology team, while also leading the Cosmology and Fundamental Physics Working Group for ESA's NewAthena Space Telescope.
She earned her Ph.D. in physics from NASA Marshall Space Flight Center, following postdoctoral fellowships at Harvard & Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, MIT, and NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. Her research expertise spans cosmology, dark matter searches, large-scale structure formation, and galaxy cluster physics through multi-wavelength survey analysis.
Dr. Bulbul's work pioneers methods to map cosmic structure growth and fundamental physics using galaxy clusters as probes, yielding the largest cluster catalog to date and precise constraints on matter distribution. Her innovative approaches to dark matter detection through X-ray signatures have redefined observational cosmology.
Her scientific contributions are celebrated through major honors:
- Mid-Career Prize, American Astronomical Society (2025)
- Marcel Grossman Award with eROSITA team (2021)
- ERC Consolidator Grant for DarkQuest project (€2M, 2020)
- American Physical Society Top Ten Research Highlights (2014 and Decade)
- University of Alabama Outstanding Research Award (2010)
She directs a vibrant research ecosystem with €2M ERC funding and NASA grants exceeding $1M as Principal Investigator, mentoring 8 graduate students across Ph.D. and Master's programs. Her team develops cutting-edge analysis frameworks for next-generation observatories while advancing dark matter detection techniques.
Based at MPE's High Energy Astrophysics Group, she leads collaborations with Euclid, Athena, Rubin Observatory, and South Pole Telescope teams. Her DarkQuest project integrates multi-wavelength data to resolve cosmological tensions, with recent work featured in Nature, Scientific American, and BBC News for revealing the universe's clumpy structure and missing baryonic matter.
