Espen Schaanning is a Professor Emeritus at the University of Oslo's Department of Philosophy, Ideas, and History of Ideas (IFIKK). He holds a French doctorate in philosophy (1989) and a Norwegian doctorate (dr. philos.) in history of ideas (2000). He served as Associate Professor from 1989 before becoming a full Professor in 2000, transitioning to emeritus status after his retirement. His primary affiliations include the University of Oslo and the editorial board of Arr - Idéhistorisk tidsskrift since 1989.
Research Interests: Schaanning focuses on the Scout Movement, French Enlightenment thought, history of punishment (particularly Foucauldian perspectives), and school history. His work also explores modernity, forensic psychiatry, and Norwegian pacifism. Current projects include studies on John Holt's school protest movement and the Nordic education model.
Publications: His recent work examines topics like meritocracy's historical role, anti-war movements as revolutionary actions, and semiotic analyses of Scout uniforms. Over 50 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters since 2000 reflect his interdisciplinary approach across history, philosophy, and education.
Professional Activities: Schaanning has led research groups on children/youth in ideological history and the Nordic model.
